That is the problem Retellect is now solving live with Rimi, part of Salling Group, Denmark's largest retail group, together with retail technology partner StrongPoint. Retellect's computer-vision AI is running at self-checkout lanes in three Rimi stores in Lithuania, recognising what is physically placed on the scale — independently of what the shopper selects.
The pilot at a glance:
How it works at the lane
When a shopper places loose produce on the scale, a camera captures the product and Retellect's AI instantly presents the most likely matches — no more scrolling through a long on-screen catalogue. The shopper always confirms the final selection, so the experience gets faster without taking away control.
From faster selection to real-time loss prevention
Because Retellect sees the physical product independently of the shopper's input, it can compare what is on the scale with what was selected on screen — and flag a mismatch before the transaction completes.
Loss prevention happens quietly in the background: the honest shopper simply gets a faster checkout, staff are alerted only when something doesn't match, and everything runs on the checkout hardware already in place.
Validated in live retail conditions
For Rimi Lietuva, the technology supports both customer experience and store operations.
"Shoppers value speed and simplicity, so we constantly test solutions that help customers shop more conveniently and faster. Helping employees spend less time on routine tasks and more on advising customers is also one of the biggest benefits of this innovation." — Vaidas Lukoševičius, CEO of Rimi Lietuva
The pilot was featured on Lithuania's TV3 News — watch the report (in Lithuanian).
